IIIT-Hyderabad holds teaching the learning Brain workshop

Hyderabad: Dr Kasturirangan, Chairman, National Education Policy, inaugurated Teaching the learning Brain Workshop for school teachers of grade 1 to 8. He delivered a keynote address at the inauguration of the workshop organised by IIIT-Hyderabad at its premises on Friday.

The former Chairman of ISRO, Dr K. Kasturirangan,  spoke about the importance of the foundational preparatory years in brain development of students.

Addressing the gathering he said, “I would like to thank IIIT Hyderabad for inviting me to speak on a subject that is now proving to be very critical in terms of the early education of a child. When we were formulating the policy on National Education we had a number of consultations on what is important for a child to learn, how do we create a development-appropriate education and effects of the brain on curriculum pedagogy etc”.

He further explained the framework relating to Early Child Care and Education (ECCE) and the next 4 stages of 5, 3, 3, and 4 years each as envisaged in the draft National Education Policy. DrKasturirangan chaired the committee that formulated the draft.

Researchers in neurocognitive sciences at IIIT-Hyderabad is conducting a 2-days workshop on Teaching the Learning Brain for school teachers of grades 1 -8 to introduce them to the aspects of cognition and neurodevelopment on learning. The program which kicked off on Friday will conclude on Saturday.

A school teacher faces the challenge of preparing classes that engage a class with the same age children, but with differential learning curves topic-wise, dissimilar conceptual understanding, with gaps in skills and disparate external (non-school) factors influencing them.

In addition, the child’s physical and emotional state affects the learning curve. Given the complexity, it is important for teachers to understand the brain from neurodevelopment aspect to design lessons appropriately and build an atmosphere of intellectual safety and trust to address the outliers (over-/under-performers) too.

Research in cognitive science, neuroscience/biology and psychology has thrown new light on learning processes and the factors affecting it. The knowledge from scientific studies helps address popular myths while giving a deeper understanding of motivation and metacognition.

This workshop brings the results of research into classroom teaching and is the first of its kind to address most if not all of the concerns of learning in an educational system as present in the Indian context.

“We want to introduce teachers to the concept of neuro-development and what children are capable of learning at various stages of development. The basic premise of the workshop is that learning happens differently for different children. Bringing about such awareness is perhaps the first step towards the larger goal of imparting education,” said KavitaVemuri, faculty at the Cognitive Sciences Research Centre and one of the lead organizers of the workshop.

Adapt innovation, avoid corruption in Civil Engr: CG Turkey

Hyderabad: Avoid corruption in civil engineering and push people away from corruption in infrastructure development”, said Consul General of Turkey Dr. Adnan Altay Altinors during the inaugural session of the three-day international conference on “Recent Advances in Civil Engineering Infrastructure RACEI 2019” organized by Muffakham Jah College of Engineering & Technology (MJCET).

Speaking on the occasion Chief Guest Consul General of Turkey Dr. Adnan Altay Altinors, who also holds a Ph.D. in Civil Engineering “expressed pride in being civil engineering, he said “civil engineering is a lifestyle. We create civilizations. From constructing buildings to providing workspaces for the industries, to airports, road transportation, irrigating lands to the construction of airports, civil engineers contribute to the economic development of the country.”

“We need to design and implement the projects properly, employ all standards, avoid corruption, and push people away from corruption.”

The Consul General, who also formerly headed the environment department at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Turkey, said his civil engineering background has helped him in domestic and international aspects including diplomatic works. He added that “there are social aspects to civil engineering with three areas most important to this discipline. First, is the implementation of the projects. “We need to design and implement the projects properly, employ all standards, avoid corruption, and push people away from corruption.”

“Secondly, a civil engineer must possess good problem-solving skills.”

He said, “for a long time, we have outsourced this part to western of other Asian countries but this needs to change”. Thirdly, innovative solutions are required to meet the challenges of fast urbanization.

Speaking on the occasion, Prof. K.V. L. Subramaniam, Professor at IIT Hyderabadsaid “India is an aspiring nation, aspiring to become a 5 trillion dollar economy. To achieve the goal, a 2 million dollar investment in infrastructure is required.”

He said with the rapid urbanization, “housing has become a major problem in almost all urban housing areas with the quality of water being a major problem.  He said “these housing centers are growing at a 7% rate annually while adding that “with one eye on the environmental damage we are doing, the other must be on the sustainable development”, he expressed.

“India will be a major destination for infrastructure-related investment in two decades, majorly because of the 5 trillion economies, the country aims to achieve. Statistically, some of the biggest infra projects are being handled in South Asia. 93 of the top buildings recognized globally are in South Asia, this is the technology adoption of South Asia”, he said.

“If the entire South Asian region has to grow, there are major investments required. There is no other way to provide the needs of the growing population.” He also mentioned the Kaleshwaram project as “probably one of its kind in the world”, with several projects of significance on the drawing board.”

P. Naidu, Project Director Hyderabad Metro Rail said, “the country needs to develop the infrastructure fast to meet the scale of the requirement for ongoing urbanization.” He said, “We must change the way of thinking, working and also change the way of scaling the operation”. He said, “the smart cities proposed by the government are an example of infrastructure blended with information technology, and young minds with their fresh ideas can be significant in transforming India.” He said, “many advancements happening in India are for mega projects which have a budget of around 1000 crores, but 90% of the projects in India are not major projects.”

He said, “for all these projects, sustainable development must be the way forward as we don’t have the right to destroy Mother Nature”. He pointed out “civil engineers, in the government, must focus on skill up-gradation as many of them have skills that are not in line with the recent advancements in the discipline” adding that “it is the responsibility of the engineers to grasp the advancements, and take them forward in their projects. The majority of these advancements are tools – tools are information technology-enabled.”

The conference will be held from 16th to 18th December 2019 at MJCET Campus with stakeholders in the discipline including students, faculty, industry experts, practicing civil engineers, and consultants. Ameenpur: Hindustan Coca-Cola Beverages inaugurates 4-day expo

The expo has an experience center where the local community will be trained and informed on waste management, skill-building, digital quotient and much more

Ameenpur: Hindustan Coca-Cola Beverages inaugurates 4-day expo
  • The Experience Center offers an opportunity for the people to explore and experience the making of their favourite beverages
  • Plans to distribute 20,000 cotton bags in response to the Government’s clarion call to discontinue using plastic bags

Ameenpur: After a resounding success of the first leg of its initiative of setting up Experience Centres in select factory locations last year, HCCB (Hindustan Coca-Cola Beverages), one of India’s top FMCG companies, has brought the Experience Center to Ameenpur this year.

The temporary expo has been set up at Ameenpur near Hyderabad, where the company’s factory is located.

The 4-day expo had been set to engage, train thousands of people into skill building, good ways of waste management, digital skills, new methods of fruit growing and much more.

Visitors will also have a chance to get to know more about HCCB, its products, and its manufacturing practices. Besides, visitors to the expo stand to win loads of prizes and a cloth bag each, which is in response to the Govt’s focus on doing away with single-use plastic bags.

The designed Experience Centre will be enabling the visitors to explore and experience different interesting facets of their favourite beverage brand including the history and legacy of the company while the kids play in the adjoining earmarked areas.

Around 20,000 people from the local community had attended the company’s Experience Centres created last year in eight different factory locations.

Speaking about the initiative, Kamlesh Sharma, Chief Communications Officer, HCCB said, “While people around our factories have always had the opportunity to visit our factories by appointment, and learn about the engineering and technology; every once a year, we look to give them a wider exposure to our organisation and the latest that is happening in the country.

The expo is being set-up in a carnival-like, open to everybody, across ages. On the other hand, the factory had been training the volunteers, who will also be educating the children by which they can easily understand concepts, adults are trained on ways of sustainable living, use of digital mediums, employable skills.

We are hoping that over the next 4 days, people in Ameenpur and Hyderabad will come and have a gala time, ahead of the New Year, and win lots of prizes, as well”

The biggest draw of the Experience Centre this year was the section where people had the option of preparing their own favourite beverage of HCCB on a tab.

The idea is not just to educate the people but also to bust many unfounded myths surrounding the ingredients that go into the making of their favourite beverages.

Referred to as a one-of-its-kind initiative, the event also demystifies the operations of the company and highlights the ‘best-in-class’ production standards and quality checks followed at every HCCB factory to produce a range of India’s favourite beverages.

The journey for the visitors at the Experience Centre, however, begins with a brand immersion where the company’s anthem created by one of India’s greatest musical maestro, Dr. Ilaiyaraaja, will play in the background.

The music that represents the new India, catches the attention of all the moment they enter the Experience Centre.

The company will also be showcasing several initiatives inspired by India. Drawing inspiration from the country’s age-old practices of recycling and reuse, HCCB highlights its initiatives to collect and recover all kinds of plastics and recycle them into clothes, jackets, T-shirts, shoes, furniture, toys etc.

Through authorised agencies. Building on the theme, the company has created a section where through gamification people could learn about segregation of waste at source, a major environmental challenge.

The gamification zone has been aimed at enabling and educating people to take care of their surroundings and contribute to the cleanliness drive.

Another case in point in this regard is the company’s Project Unnati’, which through some innovative plantation techniques has doubled mango yields per hectare of cultivation.

The local farmers seemed to enquire a lot about this technique as it promised to increase their productivity and revenues. Today, HCCB is the biggest buyer of mangoes in India.

The Experience Centre among other things also offers to help local youth develop their curriculum vitae to improve their employability. The service includes providing inputs on the know-how of basic elements such as creating a video resume, brushing up the basic skills, networking and so on.

Educating the local youth about the job opportunities available for them in its factories, the company showcases how it has employed and enabled women from the local community to handle different kinds of work inside HCCB factories.

The stories not only inspire the local community but also help break stereotypes that women can’t operate heavy manufacturing equipment or drive payloaders.

The grand ceremony culminated with the newly Commissioned Officers marching-out in two columns in slow march to the traditional notes of  ‘Auld Lang Syne’ (the poignant farewell tune played by Armed Forces of the world when bidding adieu to colleagues and comrades), acknowledging the first salute given to them by their immediate juniors.

They marched in step past the reviewing officer with synchronous strides. The newly commissioned officers passed through the portals from where the best Pilots and Ground Duty Officers of IAF have begun their journey to take-on the future assignments and challenges.

An unflinching determination was visible in the eyes of the young officers to surmount the challenges and to ‘Touch the Sky with Glory’.
